Anyone who has ever fasted, particularly the special type of fasting done during the month of Ramadan, knows the value of water. When you are fasting, you might not be that interested in food, but you are certainly going to be thinking about water. When you fast completely from sunrise to sunset, you are fasting from food, water, and other things. Your body needs water regularly, and especially in this hot, dry desert region where dehydration can be a problem. So, the lack of water during the hot daylight hours of Ramadan can be a real problem for some people, especially if they don’t drink enough water during the evening hours. So it is imperative that you drink enough water during that time.

The question is what is so special about water? Well, to tell you the truth, a lot! Remember that water contributes to 70% on average or so of our entire body weight. Without water we can’t live. It’s as simple as that. We need water just as we need air to breathe.

Water helps us to metabolize many kinds of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. It is responsible for helping us to carry out our urinary functions and our bowel functions as well. If we do not drink enough water, we often find ourselves suffering from urinary infections or constipation, both of which are miserable. We need to get all those toxins out of our bodies and the only way to do that is to drink water (in addition to eating a healthy diet).

Did you know that if you don’t drink enough water, your blood can actually become quite thick? When that happens you can imagine how difficult it is for your blood to circulate around in your body. It is the same way with our lymph circulation as well. We need to do whatever it takes to increase both our blood and our lymph circulation, and one of the best ways to do that is to drink plenty of good fresh water. The definition of good fresh water doesn’t have to be mineral water, or even spring water either, but can be simply good carbon filtered or ozone enhanced water, particularly living here in Kuwait, with the treated water that is available out of the taps. In fact, too much mineral water can actually be detrimental to your health. Luckily, we have plenty of good bottled purified water available at all the supermarkets in Kuwait, that doesn’t contain excess amounts of minerals.

Did you know that if you are overweight, drinking plenty of water will actually help you to lose weight? If you don’t drink enough, your body will not be able to react properly and metabolize at the faster pace you need to be able to keep weight off, thus making you feel sluggish, and lethargic, which is the opposite of what you need to be when you are overweight. It is water that helps our bodies to burn fat. The less water you drink, the harder it is going to be to lose weight. Plus, if you are one of those people who retain water it is even more important that you take care to drink plenty of water, because the less water you drink, the more likely it is going to be that you will retain more water. So, drinking more and more water will actually help your body to get rid of all that excess water weight that it is holding on to.

Your skin will also thank you for drinking plenty of water, because without it, you will most likely have dry, dehydrated skin. You will also not have that glow that everyone wants. That is the glow that tells others that you are healthy. It is so important and even can help prevent wrinkles and other signs of aging.

Plus, in this super hot region, particularly when we are fasting, drinking plenty of water during the non-fasting hours is imperative for regulating the temperature of our bodies. If we don’t have enough water circulating around our bodies, we cannot get the optimum temperature control that we need, and this is extremely important to our general health.  This is another part of a properly working metabolism, and without that we can’t expect our bodies to work well otherwise.

Also, if you want your brain to function as it should you absolutely must drink plenty of water. It is extremely important that you get in enough hydrating water in to your evening hours, so that your mental functions stay healthy and at an optimal pace.

You are also more likely to come down with the host of viruses and bacteria that are going around if you don’t drink enough water. When you are getting enough water your body is able to flush out those invaders and keep you safe from their attack.

So, starting from the time you break your fast, until the time of the early morning call to prayer, make sure that you drink plenty of water. Keep a small bottle of water with you at all times, in order to remind you to drink it. Don’t skimp, and preferably don’t drink lots of coffee, tea, and carbonated drinks, which will take away from your overall hydration. Sip water throughout your waking non-fasting hours, and be as healthy as you can be!
