Every single person (even animals have it too) on earth has something called a circadian clock. This organ is also called the “biological clock”, and is known scientifically as the “suprachiasmatic nucleus” (SCN). This so-called clock is responsible for the inner rhythms of our bodies, which technically run on a 25 hour cycle (although we assume a 24 hour cycle based on daylight and nighttime hours). Actually the circadian clock is really a tiny organ consisting of two tiny lobes the size of pin heads and made up of thousands of tiny neurons found in the hypothalamus in our brains that is responsible for the timings of our existences. This tiny organ gives the body information and changes things, for example temperature, awareness (wakefulness), and hormonal changes. It is believed that light plays an important part in the operation of this organ, and thus the daytime, nighttime differences that are found. But it is known to be affected by other influences as well, even sounds, etc. (like the ringing of an alarm clock for example). This is also why people get jet lag when changing time zones, especially when going forward in time. The circadian clock basically rules over many important hormonal functions through the pineal gland also found in the brain. It is so important that without the proper workings of it, we can easily die. That is one of the reasons that people who are severely sleep deprived begin to hallucinate and can eventually die in some extreme cases if the lack of sleep continues for any length of time.

It is due to this circadian clock that we have that it is important that we sleep at night and wake up in the daytime. The circadian clock is also why people who work the night shift and sleep during the daytime can possibly become ill, and often (if not always) do not get that completely rested feeling that people who sleep at night get. They go through life feeling “not quite right”. Indeed, they aren’t because there are some important hormones that are only secreted during certain periods of sleep at night, and never during the daytime, no matter what period of sleep the person is in. In fact, most work related accidents occur during the night shift or when workers have been sleep deprived. Also, it is known that shift workers suffer from an inordinately high ratio of mental, emotional, and physical problems. If you think about it, that is quite profound. It really makes you think. For all of us night owls all over the world, and all of the late night diwaniyah lovers in these Middle Eastern countries, this should be a word to the wise. While you might think it fun to stay up all night, your body will take the toll, and you will ultimately pay a price for it. You have to ask yourself if it is worth it. Is your daily late night fun worth trading your health for? I don’t think so. This isn’t to say that you can’t stay up late sometimes. Doing anything once in a while isn’t going to hurt you, but staying up all night every single day is going to be harmful sooner or later. So make sure you get to bed early enough to sleep well at night.

If you or someone you know suffers from problems such as depression (or other mental illness), problematic blood pressure, heart and circulation problems, allergies, acne, psoriasis, eczema, asthma, or a host of other ailments, it might be because your sleep schedule is out of kilter. So, in order to solve the problem, one of the first things you must do is to get your sleep back on track. Make sure that you sleep during the nighttime and get up in the morning. Sleeping relatively early is a good idea as well, in order to give your body plenty of time to get the rest it needs so that your circadian clock will be able to function at its best. Waking up early will put your body in good stead for a healthy and energetic day. Once you get on a regular schedule of sleeping at night and waking up early in the day (preferably not sleeping after eating your lunch), you will soon begin to feel much better and often, without doing anything else, your health will automatically improve.

Naturally, ideally you will need to make other healthy changes in your life as well. It is important to make sure that you also eat well. Eating well means that you need to eat whole, preferably organic foods. You have to make sure to get plenty of fresh, healthy sources of protein including seafood, poultry, meats, eggs, etc, and plenty of fresh, wholesome vegetables, with small amounts of whole grains, fruit, and other supplementary foods added for variety. You must also do your best to get in some form of exercise on a regular basis. Any type will do, including walking, swimming, bicycling, and more. Not only will you feel stronger with exercise, but you will sleep better as well, which will definitely help your circadian clock to work better. This will keep your metabolism up, help your circulation and your lymph to carry away the impurities in your body, and turn you into a much healthier person to be sure.

The bottom line is that our circadian clock is extremely important to our daily living. In fact, without it we simply do not live healthily (and in some extreme cases, at all). Just because it is not something obvious that we think about all the time or even notice, doesn’t mean that it isn’t imperative to our well being. In fact, it is one of the most important organs that we have in our bodies. So, we must do the best we can to keep it in tip top shape. This means getting enough sun, enough sleep, and enough good food and exercise. This means sleeping at night and waking up in the daytime, and making sure we stay on this healthy natural cycle. Let’s get healthy!

The Water Crystal Miracle (Part One)

What kind of image do you get in your mind when I say “snowflake”? If you are from a colder climate originally (as I am) and you have any experience with snow, particularly as a child, you will immediately imagine two things. The first is the original, that amazingly lacy, one of a kind, intricately designed by nature ice crystal that you used to look at stuck to the outside of your window panes throughout winter. Those wispy fantastic icy delicious flakes that used to land on your tongue is what will come to mind. It is a scientific fact that each and every one of these snow flakes (which are made up of a number of ice crystals) are completely and absolutely individual, with no one snow flake ever looking exactly like any other one. They are always one of a kind.

Another image that always comes to my mind is the paper snowflakes that we used to make as children. We would fold paper into a very small square, and cut geometric corners and pieces out, so that when we unfolded it we would get our own rendition of the natural snowflake. Every time we made on it would be just a little different (or a lot) just like the real ones. We would stick these on the walls and windows, and could be extremely beautiful in their own right. (In fact one day when I was going through my papers, I found some ancient paper snowflakes that I had made many moons ago. They are still beautiful and I still love them!)

Ice crystals are one of those little God given miracles that we don’t really think about very much. They are always there, so we don’t feel their rarity, and we hardly ever sit and concentrate on them to admire their beauty. If your refrigerator gets frosted up, you will find that it is loaded with ice crystals in the form of that nasty frothy frozen water that we want to get rid of. The only time we really think about how fantastic ice crystals are is when they are in the form of snow, and here in Kuwait, we are not likely to get snow any time in the near future. Thus, the only people who really know about the beauty of snow and ice crystals are those living in the farther north or south, where it snows. Well, that is a true shame, because those ice crystals are some of the most amazing things you will ever see. They are special because they are wonderful to look at, but also because of their fleeting nature. As soon as they melt they are gone forever.

I recently came to know something very interesting about ice crystals. An interesting discovery has been made about water and ice crystals. There is a Japanese researcher who has initiated some of the most enlightening science that you will see in a long time. The implications of this science are immense if used to their maximum potential, but the party has only just begun, and hardly anyone is aware of it yet. I am talking about ice crystal formation and the influencing factors that affect them. If I told you that it has been discovered that certain words, music, and other influences can affect water, what would you think? Perhaps you would think that sounded a bit crazy. After all, water is water isn’t it? How could outside influences affect it?

Well, the idea is that every single thing on earth has something that we call vibrations. I am talking everything, including inanimate objects, so water has vibrations as well. That is why sometimes when you look at an object it almost looks and feels good, comforting, or even evil. We can feel it from inside our “souls”, but can’t really explain it on the outside. Water is not different. It has vibrations too. But, water is important to us as humans since we need so much of it. Our bodies are made up of more than 80% water, and we need to keep on replenishing it in one way or another every day. We might get our water from fruit or vegetables, or just from drinking it, but we need it. So, what if there was something wrong with our water? What if the water we were drinking wasn’t as healthy as it seemed. If we kept drinking unhealthy water, sooner or later it would have to affect our health, wouldn’t it? It only makes sense that that would be true. One the other hand, what if we were drinking healthy water? It stands to reason that healthy water would be ideal for us and help bring us to good health. Health water, good health…makes sense, doesn’t it?

What if I told you that water could be “made” to be healthier? What if I told you that we could be harming ourselves through harmful water that doesn’t look, seem, or test harmful from a known scientific medical standpoint, but is actually harmful due to other factors? It piques your interest doesn’t it?

It did mine when I first heard about it. I had to know what they were talking about, and when I did know, I was so blown away that I just had to incorporate it into my life immediately (which I have). Then, the next thing on my agenda was to share this important, indeed, revolutionary, life changing information with you. The rest of this story is so incredible that it is likely to change many things about your life if you take it to heart. Naturally, it will only change you if you let it, because the information you are about to find out about is something that you can either implement or not. No one is going to force it on you. But if you have the slightest bit of common sense you will see how mind boggling this concept is and use it for your benefit and the benefit of others. What makes it ideal is that there is really nothing simpler. The concept is easy to understand and even easier to use. For those of you who were following my “Mind over Matter” series that recently ran in the paper for several weeks, this is a logical extension of the concepts that you learned there.

So, next week we will get into the meat of what this concept is all about and how to use it for your health and well being, as well as that of your family and friends. If you haven’t read the “Mind over Matter” series, go to the Internet now and check it out on Arab Times Online (in the health section from recent weeks). There are eleven articles in that series, read them all. While you don’t have to understand or use the concept of “mind over matter” in your life in order to understand how water crystals work, it will certainly help you a great deal and give you several alternative views of looking at the issue, which will make this new experience all the more enlightening for you.

The Power of Positive Thinking – Revisited

I had this week’s article already planned out until I got an email from one of the readers about how they were thinking that the idea of “mind over matter” and “positive thinking” were very nice and all, but she really couldn’t imagine being able to apply such concepts realistically in her life.  She stated that she had been feeling depressed for some time and that she really was pretty much at the end of her rope and didn’t know what to do. When I read this letter I felt sad for her, that she has been and still is suffering so much from different problems, but I also felt glad in a way, because she had connected with the articles about mind over matter and positive thinking in the first place, which means she is already halfway there. I’m sure she doesn’t even know it yet, but indeed it is true. Perhaps since she wrote the email she has progressed even further, and gone on to apply one or two of the positive thinking concepts in her own life. It doesn’t really take much to be able to make this way your own. In fact it is quite simple indeed. It just sounds and feels difficult for some because they are so far away from doing that sort of thing that it seems totally alien to them. Really, every single person has it in them to act and react in just the way that I have been describing throughout this series. It just takes a little effort.  Isn’t it worth it? I think it is!

Now, getting back to our mission, remember, we are changing the world one mind at a time.  So you begin with yourself, and then through you the rest of the world will change. If you don’t believe me, just try it. But, remember, it is important to think positively about this, and to know for certain that indeed one single person can be the impetus for changing things in the entire world. What do you think about people like Moses, Jesus, and other prophets? Didn’t they change the world? What do you think about people like Mother Theresa, Gandhi, and all the other people who have done great good? Haven’t they made an impact on the entire world? They have! So, who says that you can’t do something for the world too?

Have you ever heard of the phrase “pay it forward”? This is a concept that began when a young, fictional boy in a story started what has become a worldwide movement.  It means that you do a good deed for three different people. When they ask how they can pay you back, you simply say, don’t pay it back, you pay it forward by helping three more people. Thus, the initial three people helped would ideally go and help three more each, and the “helping” movement would spread out so far that it would include thousands, if not millions of people. That was what the story book boy had in mind. But, as life imitates art, a real-life movement has been initiated on behalf of the concept of paying it forward. The great thing is that the idea of paying it forward doesn’t have to mean that the good deed is something difficult, or something expensive, or even something time consuming.  It can be as simple as a smile (although we should be giving those on a very regular basis). It can be helping someone carry their bags, or helping an elderly person cross the street, giving a young person important advice in a nice, caring way, giving money to a total stranger who looks like he (or she) might be hungry, giving someone a warm coat to wear on a cold day, giving someone a bottle of water (particularly here in Kuwait where the summers are scorching hot at up to 50 plus degrees centigrade), or a cold drink, some clean food, etc. Imagine how you would feel if your job was to clean the streets in the hot summer sun, and you were required to walk along the streets from the morning until the afternoon or God knows when, in order to pick up the papers and cans that some inconsiderate people threw out their window. You probably wouldn’t feel good at all. So, what can you do to “pay it forward”?

Well, first of all, each and every one of us needs to be extremely thankful that the person doing that job isn’t us. Then, we must think of nice ways to help these destitute people out. You know they are poor, live in very difficult conditions, and make practically nothing to send home to their families.  So, why don’t we get them food that they can eat while they are outside, nice cold bottles of water, and even clothing, rather than give the clothing to the charity box. We can give them money as well, if we like, why not? In fact there is practically no end to what we can do for the street workers, as well as the construction workers, the road workers, and more. Also, no matter how small your income is, try to make sure that somehow, someway you are giving even the smallest smidgeon of it to the poor. No matter how small your salary seems to be, you can be sure of two things: that there are other people who make less than you do; and that you are a millionaire compared to some. If you keep that in mind, and also, at the same time, always remember to give a little bit to charity, you will find that your own wealth starts increasing and as long as you don’t count it all the time (except to make sure that the bank isn’t stealing it) will continue to do so.

I’m sure some people are reading this thinking what?” “What does giving in charity and not counting my money have to do with my anything???” “If I don’t count it I won’t know what I have!!!I” Well I will tell you what I like to do. I like to just ignore my money and leave it, give as generously as I can, and I always find myself with more money than I thought I had. Sometimes it’s less or more, but that’s alright. You see, it doesn’t really matter what the quantity is, because what is important is that you give something, no matter how small it seems. One of my favorite good deeds is to NOT throw papers and other trash in the street, but to carry them around with me, until I am able to find a proper trash receptacle. Another thing we can do is to pick up papers, cans, and things that other people throw down (if it is feasible) and throw them into proper trash receptacles. Just make sure that you are smiling when you do it.

positive-thinking

Have you ever heard the phrase mind over matter? If you have, you may or may not know what it is or how to use it, and if you haven’t heard it before, you have now! These three little words, “mind over matter” might be the most important words you will ever hear, and if you use them they will definitely be some of the most powerful. I say this because these words can change your life. But it won’t be the words of course, it will be you. It will be your own positive thinking.

So, you might be wondering what this phrase means, or you might know what it means but not how it relates to your life. On the other hand you might be one of those gifted people who already understand the concept of “mind over matter” and apply it in their life, if so you are already ahead of the game, but even then you can read on, because you may just glean some important new angles from this article. You see, you can never learn too much about this amazing concept. You can never go too far in applying it. The fact is that mind over matter is one of life’s miracles that every single person can avail, but very few ever do. And that is truly a shame.

power-of-positive-thinking

I am one of those people who have always had a natural feeling for the concept of mind over matter. I have always known and believed this concept and applied it in my life. This concept and the optimistic drive that I have and use every day has made me who and what I am today, and is still changing me on a daily basis, hopefully into a progressively much better person. You might say that I believe in miracles, and I also believe that whatever I dream about can come true if I want it to, and if God gives it to me. So, while I fervently believe that mind over matter is real, palpable, and at the disposal of every single human being, I also believe that God may or may not let me (and others) have whatever I (or they) want or am (are) working for depending on His absolute knowledge. Thus, the concept “mind over matter” comes attached to an aspect of trust in universal wisdom and power, but that doesn’t negate your power and the power of your will. You will find that your will is one of the most powerful tools you will ever have, and you can benefit yourself and others to a degree that you may have never dreamed of, so read on.

You see, you have the power to get what you want. You have the power to make your dreams come true. You have the power to be whatever you want to be. That power is mind over matter.

positive-thinking-game

So, we need to define mind first. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary the word “mind” means:

1 : RECOLLECTION, MEMORY <keep that in mind> <time out of mind>
2 a : the element or complex of elements in an individual that feels, perceives, thinks, wills, and especially reasons b : the conscious mental events and capabilities in an organism c : the organized conscious and unconscious adaptive mental activity of an organism
3 : INTENTION, DESIRE.

Aha! Mind is our thinking, feelings, and everything else that is conscious. Good. And what about matter? According to the same dictionary it means:

1 a : a subject under consideration b : a subject of disagreement or litigation c plural : the events or circumstances of a particular situation d : the subject or substance of a discourse or writing e : something of an indicated kind or having to do with an indicated field or situation <this is a serious matter> <as a matter of policy> <matters of faith> f : something to be proved in law g obsolete : sensible or serious material as distinguished from nonsense or drollery h (1) obsolete : REASON, CAUSE (2) : a source especially of feeling or emotion i : PROBLEM, DIFFICULTY

2 a : the substance of which a physical object is composed b : material substance that occupies space, has mass, and is composed predominantly of atoms consisting of protons, neutrons, and electrons, that constitutes the observable universe, and that is interconvertible with energy c : a material substance of a particular kind or for a particular purpose <vegetable matter> d (1) : material (as feces or urine) discharged from the living body (2) : material discharged by suppuration : PUS

3 a : the indeterminate subject of reality; especially : the element in the universe that undergoes formation and alteration b : the formless substratum of all things which exists only potentially and upon which form acts to produce realities

Now, you might think that this is too much information about the word “matter”, but it isn’t, because the concept of “mind over matter” includes all this and more. It can be applied in every situation, for every person and at every time.

positive-energy-poster

That’s all I’m going to tell you this time, but I now want to make a request. I want each and every one of you, my readers, to tell me what you think I mean by “mind over matter”, and if you already apply this concept in your life I want you to tell me how. If you don’t apply it I want you to tell me what you think it is and how you might be able to use it in your life. Your ideas and thoughts will be published next week. My email is below, and I want to hear from you!

Did you know that Bay Leaves, Marjoram, and Oregano Are GREAT for Your Health?

Italian Herbs

If you like Italian food, you’re going to love what I have to say today! We are going to talk about three of the most important green herbs in Italian food. For those who cook Italian you will definitely know what I’m talking about, and for those of you who don’t know how, never fear, the Italian cooking wonder is here!

Italian Herbs Organic Dried

The three most important herbs in Italian cooking are bay leaves, marjoram, and oregano. (Basil is also important but we have already sung its wonders in a previous article).

Scientifically bay leave (also known as bay laurel) is called Laurus Nobilis, and is an evergreen herb, mostly grown in Asia and the Mediterranean. This herb has been used since ancient times, and was considered the herb of champions. Haven’t you ever heard of “resting on your laurels”? (That is when people who are winners get lazy). In ancient Greece and Rome, poets and others were crowned with wreathes of bay laurel, in honor. Also, at that time and after people believed that bay leaves could protect people against evil and disease. Although this herb is mostly used in cooking (and is imperative for a great Italian tomato sauce, but only for flavoring, not for eating), there are plenty of medicinal uses as well. Bay is good for muscle aches and pains, rheumatism and arthritis (for which it is apparently like a miracle), colds, bronchitis, and the flu, stomach ailments (also gassiness), and skin problems (like rashes). It is said that pregnant women shouldn’t take bay leaf though, because it is very astringent and might cause contractions. It is also good to help bring down a fever, and is supposed be great for diabetics, being particularly helpful in metabolizing sugar.

Bay leaves organic

In order to treat with bay leaves, you can make a nice light tea with the leaves, or make an infusion and use it for hot compresses on achy muscles and joints. It can be used as a poultice on the chest (for flu, bronchitis, etc), and directly on bruises, sprains, etc. And low and behold, putting a few in your drawers or closets will help to keep the moths and other bugs out.

organic oregano

Now, the deal with oregano and marjoram is that they are from the same “Origanum” family, and are basically the same. They are both native to the Mediterranean areas, although they are also found in the Sham areas (like Syria, for example), as well as practically everywhere else around the world now as well. Oregano is stronger than marjoram, which has a very mild, sweet flavor. Interestingly, all marjorams are oreganos, but not all oreganos are marjorams. Go figure! Oregano is known scientifically as Origanum vulgare (which is also known as wild marjoram), while marjoram is known as Origanum majorana L. What’s even stranger is that they act the same in some ways, and very differently in others. Oregano is considered a winter herb, while marjoram is considered a summer one. It would be ideal to use marjoram fresh, but it isn’t available in Kuwait like that unless you grow it yourself, so dried will probably have to do. You can usually find it in the grocer’s herb and spice section of any larger supermarket. Oregano can also be used fresh, but here in Kuwait is probably only available in dried form. Don’t confuse it with some kinds of what they call “zaatar” here in Kuwait. That’s not really what it is.

organic marjoram

These herbs are also known to be good for diabetes, and they are both antibacterial and antifungal. There is nothing better for an upset stomach than marjoram, and it is also amazing for sore throats. It is one of the most soothing herbs I have ever seen, and can reduce swelling practically immediately. These herbs have also been used since ancient times, and again, the ancient Greeks and Romans used to love both.

Marjoram and oregano are both great for stomach problems, colic, and many people say headaches. They are also good for colds, flu, fever, and cough. You can also take it for relaxing because it is so soothing that many use it as a sedative. People who have menstrual problems use marjoram and oregano to soothe the cramping. If you suffer from arthritis or rheumatism, you will also find relief in these two herbs, and you can both drink it and use it externally. Both oregano and marjoram are great for getting rid of swelling and can also be taken both internally and used externally for that purpose. If you suffer from edema, then a nice light tea will help if you drink it on a regular basis, and swelling due to injury will be greatly relieved with both of these herbs. You can use an infusion with compresses for relief.

Like bay, both oregano and marjoram are supposed to be very helpful for those who suffer with diabetes, and they are said to help the body metabolize the sugar taking the place of the missing insulin. Marjoram is good for high blood pressure and more. They both are also great for liver problems and gall stones.

Oregano has been found to be so high in antioxidants that it leaves even garlic in the rear, and if you’ve been watching Oprah in the past year, you will have seen a program talking about super foods, and how great blueberries, etc, are. Well, I have news for you! Statistically, oregano beats them all. Listen to this. From an antioxidant point of view, according to an Internet source, oregano has: 4 times more than blueberries, 12 times more than oranges, 30 times more than potatoes, and 42 times more than apples! Now that is incredible!

Organic italian seasoning

But, don’t overdo any of these herbs, because they can be harmful. Always remember, in herbal medicine, less is more. Go light on any herb you take and you will never have a problem. When you make any herbal tea, always make your tea as light as possible. You want a light green color, nothing dark! Keep that as a rule, and you will never go wrong.

Dandelion: A Real Weed Herb

dandelion 2

We have been talking about green herbs for a few weeks now, and it occurred to me that one of the best herbs anywhere is one that you don’t even have to buy! All you have to do is go out to your lawn, garden, front doorstep in order to find it, and best of all it’s FREE!

The herb I’m talking about is actually considered a weed by most, but I’m not one of those people who think so. I happen to think that this herb is delicious, beneficial, beautiful, and, well, annoying if you have a lawn, but if you take it in the right perspective then you shouldn’t have a problem with it. Look on the bright side. Instead of thinking how it is taking over and blocking out your beautiful grass, think about how its flowers are so nice, its baby leaves are so delicious and make the most wonderful salads, and how its leaves are so good for your health too. OK, now either you know for sure what I’m talking about or you are really wondering what it is, so I’ll unveil the not-so-secret secret. DANDELION!!! (Yes, I’m talking about those pesky weeds that take over lawns and provide children with hours of entertainment blowing the flyaway spores off of the flower stalks after they dry up).

dandelion root

Scientifically dandelion is called Taraxacum officinale, and is found almost every place in the world growing wild. I’ve never heard of anyone cultivating it, but it’s possible that people do, since it is sold quite extensively dried for medicinal purposes. It is found in Kuwait around most homes and in the desert, but it is a desert version of the plant that is found here, which isn’t quite as succulent as the one found in more temperate locations, but is still good from a medicinal point of view.

Fresh baby dandelion leaves are nice in salads and if you don’t believe me, just ask anyone from many European countries. My father (he was born in Italy) is the one who turned me on to this delicious delicacy when I was a little kid, and I’ve been interested in dandelions ever since. I have always thought that a lawn covered in dandelions was the most beautiful sight, but I quickly learned that not everyone had the same penchant for dandelions, and most people went out of their way to get rid of dandelions, even resorting to poison! But, not me! I love the leaves, the beautiful yellow puffy flowers, the dried up puffballs, and even the milky centers of the stems that stain whatever they come into contact with. I just love dandelions.

The good news is that dandelions aren’t just another pretty weed. They are actually an extremely good medicinal herb that can be used for practically every ailment that you can think of. Different parts of the dandelion can be used as well, including the leaf and the root. You can use them fresh or dried, and either one is fine. So, if you absolutely can’t find any dandelions growing in your area, then you can use dried as a last resort.

Dandelion can be used for so many different problems that you will hardly know where to begin. You can use it when you have an upset stomach or any kind of digestive problem. If you are suffering from some kind of urinary tract problem or are feeling swollen or bloated, dandelion is a fantastic diuretic (and it’s loaded with potassium, which is what chemical diuretics deplete from your body). It is also good for people suffering from high blood pressure for the same reason. Dandelion also has a good helping of Vitamin C, and also B, A, and D, along with calcium and iron as well. It is great for helping liver problems, particularly liver congestion (and is even good in cases of cirrhosis of the liver), and is even said to get rid of gallstones and kidney stones too. It is also good for helping with any kind of toxic buildup in the body, so people with allergies and food sensitivities would do well to hook themselves up with some dandelion. It is well known as a blood cleanser and is great for any kind of detoxification program that you might be interested in. It is a blood builder as well, so if you or someone you know has anemia, tell them right away, and maybe your problem will disappear. I have heard that the milky substance inside the stem is also great getting rid of things like warts, but I haven’t tried that one myself yet. Dandelion is great for helping to reduce cholesterol buildup in the blood, and is an overall super-tonic for practically everything that ails you.

There are people who swear by dandelion for rheumatism and arthritis pain, drinking a light tea of dandelion leaf for help. For this purpose it can be taken either internally or externally, depending on what your problem is. Lots of medicinal herbalists say that dandelion helps to increase fat metabolism, therefore it is good for losing weight, and along with that is its effects on diabetes. Many claim that it even helps with cancer! I haven’t seen it working myself, but people swear by it!

All in all, for such a common place herb you would hardly even realize how great it is. But great it IS! So, the next time you see a dandelion, you can look at it in a new light.

Dill

The next time you visit your green grocer, there’s another green herb that you can buy and use as medicine. This herb is widely available in Kuwait and all over the world, and can be purchased in every supermarket and also at roadside stands. The herb I am talking about is called dill, and in Arabic it is called “shbint”. Dill grows naturally in many places, especially in the Mediterranean, and is well known in Italy, Portugal, Spain, and even grows in Russia. Dill was even used by the ancient Egyptians, the ancient Syrians, and in ancient Iraq (by the Babylonians) thousands of years ago! The ancient Romans used it for the gladiators, because they claimed that it made them stronger. It is widely used in Iran and around the Middle East today as a flavoring herb. In many European and American countries too, dill is used as a common flavoring for many different types of foods. Commercially today dill is mostly from India and the United States, where it is widely cultivated. This herb is used with rice and “marag” (which is a Kuwaiti style soup or curry-like dish), and sometimes with fish. The seeds of dill herb can also be used, either in essential oil form or herb form, but it is the herb that is more widely available in Kuwait, while the seed is more widely available in the USA and some other places, since it is used in those yummy dill pickles, and the essential oil is available wherever essential oils are sold.

Dill herb is very useful as a medicinal herb and has been used in this capacity for centuries. Dill is well known in folk medicinal lore, and is one of the most important Western herbs. It is well known for its properties of reducing abdominal gasses, and is an antispasmodic, particularly useful in babies, since it is such a safe and mild herb. If you have a baby or know someone who does, perhaps you are familiar with gripe water. This is given to colicky babies to soothe them, and one of the main ingredients is dill. It is also good for nausea (even the nausea of motion sickness) as well as a general digestive tonic, and is great for those who suffer either acutely or chronically from various types of bowel disorders. It is even good for diarrhea, in fact even dysentery, as it kills the bacteria that are prevalent in that illness. People who are suffering with a hiatus hernia may find help from this wonderful aromatic herb. Many swear by its ability to rid a person of bad breath.

Dill is great as a diuretic, and is supposed to help new mothers to increase their breast milk. Over the years dill has become known to help people who are suffering from insomnia as well. Perhaps a nice cup of dill tea a little while before going to bed would do a person well. If you suffer from menstrual pain, then dill herb is just what the doctor ordered, and dill also regulates it, and stimulates the flow.

dill seed essential oil

Dill is known as an anti-inflammatory herb, and is good for drinking if you are constantly coming down with something, in order to build up your immune system. If you have any skin problems, then dill should help you with that problem as well, and you can either drink it or apply it directly for helping the skin.

Dill is well-known for its respiratory healing properties, and it is particularly useful when it comes to helping to cure asthma, bronchitis, flu, chough, and more. Dill can also be used as a poultice (on the outside of the body). All you have to do is crush the dill weed, or cook it slightly, till it turns into a blob, and put it directly on the skin for injuries (particularly swollen ones), boils, wounds (even ones with pus), bruises, etc, then, cover it with gauze or another type of bandage. This is also good for achy joints, rheumatic pain, and other muscle ailments.

One important note though. Take it easy and don’t go overboard on this herb (at least until you’ve tried it several times), because some people claim that it makes people sensitive to the sun, and we all know that the sun is one of those commodities that we have plenty of here in Kuwait! Test it out for a while first, to be on the safe side, because, while it has never had that effect on me, and the Arabs and Iranians eat it extensively without complaining of this effect, you never know. That way, if you try it and are fine, then you can continue to eat it to your heart’s delight. It really does taste delicious in foods, and makes a really great tea. You can also blend it with many other lovely seeds and herbs to make wonderful aromatic teas and tisanes to drink, so use your imagination!

NOTE: To all those people who have been wondering where that juice place that sells wheatgrass juice is that I mentioned in an article a while back, there are lots of places now in Kuwait where you can get wheatgrass shots.
