Here in Kuwait where the sun is so bright and hot, we must always be very careful about how much of it we get. Don’t think that just because you see people walking around and even working in the middle of the day that you can do the same thing. Particularly if you are new in Kuwait and are from a normally more temperate climate, don’t try to fight with nature. Don’t think that you can just push yourself a little more. Even when the weather is beautiful, the sand is great, and the water is calm and perfect for skiing, boarding, sailing, or jetskiiing, don’t be tempted. You might end up sautéed or worse. This goes the same for golfers, volleyball players, basketball players, and anyone else who thinks that they can stand the sun. When the temperature is more than 45 degrees (or even when it’s more or less) you just don’t want to take chances with your health.

Always make sure that you have water with you, and are properly covered when going out in the sun. You are probably wondering what I’m talking about here, but, in fact, if you cover up you will feel cooler and more comfortable than if you go around with the sun beating on your bare skin. Those flowing desert clothes are not for nothing! At least wear a big floppy hat to keep the sun off of your head, or use an umbrella (like many people do). You don’t want to get sunstroke, which is very dangerous, particularly in the Kuwaiti heat. You also don’t want to get dehydrated. So, always take precautions, and make sure you are fully prepared for your outings, particularly if you are going to be any distance away from amenities. Remember, if you feel dizzy, are sweating too much, feel faint, or light headed, disoriented, nauseated, or feverish, these are danger signs. Heed them! Get out of the sun immediately, and get help.

Always wear sunscreen when you’re out in the sun, and if you are in the water, you must keep on applying more sunscreen every time you get in and out of the water. Also, you must make sure that you do not choose the hottest times of day for your outings. Between the hours of 10 AM and 3 PM you really do not want to be baking in the sun!

Sunburn in Kuwait is not something that you ever want to experience. It is just about as miserable as anything you will ever have to endure. I know because I have had the most horrible sunburn, acquired in 55 degree weather, on a boat and beach trip, stuck on a deserted island for more than 6 hours, on a sea trip gone wrong, with sparkling water glistening on me, my friend, and our children, reflecting the beautiful (Ha) sun. Not!

We were burned crispy. The excruciating pain was awful and almost more than I could bear. Also, because I hadn’t thought ahead, I didn’t have anything to treat myself or anyone else with, except for a small bottle of blended essential oil that I used to carry around everywhere that wasn’t even enough to cover a small area. We had to wait several hours later until after we got rescued by the coast guard (it’s a long story) so that we could put some lavender essential oil on! Needless to say, take a lesson from my horrible experience, and don’t do what we did! Remember, it doesn’t take that long for a burn to occur either. It can take as little as 15 minutes.

But, if for some reason, even after taking all the precautions in the world, you still do get sunburned do not fear, help is near. Right off, if you get any kind of burn at all, sunburn included, the first thing you should always tried to do is plunge it (yourself) into cold water, in order to stop the burn. If you don’t have any cold water, any water will do, or even ice cubes if they are available (although they aren’t ideal).

Lavender Essential Oil

The next step is to immediately apply lavender essential oil. Lavender oil is so effective against burns that it is absolutely amazing. Not only will it deal with the burning immediately, but it will also prevent other problems that occur with burns. You will not have problems with peeling skin, nor will you have to deal with the stinging pain of serious sunburn. It will also prevent infection and inflammation, which can sometimes be a problem with sunburn, particularly bad ones. (Another side benefit is that your tan won’t even be ruined, although, I am certainly NOT recommending tanning by any stretch of the imagination, unless you want to look like an old piece of leather by the time you are 35!) Not to mention the dangers of skin cancer!

One recommended home cure for sunburn is the tea cure. You just brew some tea (it’s easier to use tea bags so you don’t have such a mess) and use old towels to apply it lukewarm (not cold) directly onto the areas that are burned. This will help with the burn, and also help to prevent infections and help stop the pain.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera is a great healing plant. They are widely available in Kuwait and are very inexpensive. All you have to do is to break or cut off one of the leaves, and inside you will find a succulent, slimy, gel-like substance. You can apply that substance just the way it is, in order to relieve the burning and itch of sunburn. It also helps prevent against infection with its special constituents.

Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar

Some people swear by vinegar (specifically apple cider) to take away the stinging and burning, and help the burn to heal much faster than it normally would. One of the good things about using vinegar is that you will probably always have it around in your kitchen, but the smell might put you off, so you may want to stick with the lavender. Chamomile oil is another recommendation that some have mentioned. Mouthwash has also been used for applying to sunburn, and it is supposed to have been used in the military for burns when nothing else was available. Others claim the same from Preparation H (this is actually supposed to be a hemorrhoid treatment). Try them in a pinch. Vanilla is another option when it is available. Both real and artificial are supposed to be equally as good. It is supposed to stop the stinging and prevent peeling. Oatmeal is a good option as well, since it is so soothing. It is good for any kind of inflammation, and can easily be made into a bath additive by powdering the oatmeal and adding it to very warm (but not hot) water.

Calendula Oil

I have found that calendula (marigold) infused oil also works wonders to sooth the burn and heal it, and there are plenty of people who say that olive oil (either plain or mixed with a little vinegar) has a similar effect.

But, while lavender essential oil is probably your best choice in treating sunburn, the best treatment for sunburn is prevention. So, follow all precautions, don’t ignore the signs, and try to stay out of the sun as much as possible.

Hemorrhoids are simply enlarged (sometimes super enlarged) varicose veins of the butt.

(Which is why the oil blend remedy is goof for varicose veins too).

Sometimes they are on the inside and sometimes on the outside of your rectal area (sorry.. this subject requires talking about those forbidden nether regions)…

Sometimes they bleed and sometimes they don’t.

There are a number of reasons that people might get piles…
Many pregnant women get them because of the strain of the weight of the baby and the constipation that sometimes comes along with being pregnant.

Other women get them on the delivery table.. for obvious reasons (to anyone who has ever had a baby)… from pushing.. sometimes other things get pushed out too, including veins.

People who are chronically constipated or chronically have diarrhea often get them more.

The Recipe for the Cure

My Own Personal Recipe for to get rid of hemorrhoids forever:

Cypress Pure Essential Oil
Pure Olive Oil

Calendula Infused Oil

You can add some geranium oil in too if you like.. that makes this amazing recipe even better…

What else will you need?

Common Bar Soap

(Yeah, can you believe that is all there is????)

How to Do It

Every time you go to the bathroom (yeah.. why are we using potty talk here? … oh well) after you’re done you will need to wash with bar soap and water, and then dry very well.

Take 10 ml (or around 1/3 oz or 2 teaspoons of olive oil or calendula oil) and mix it with 3 or 4 drops of cypress oil (if you are using the geranium oil you will use slightly less of the cypress).

Blend well, and keep in a dedicated dropper bottle or any other covered closed glass bottle type container, preferably not clear (because essential oils will evaporate if left in a clear container or in heat or the sun.

Use the oil blend immediately after drying every time you go to the bathroom for a B. Movement (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, leave a message below..)

If you suffer from piles or fissures, you are going to want to make sure that your bowel movements are as healthy as possible.

I know this subject isn’t very nice to talk about, but I am going to do it anyway to help all those people out there who are suffering.

                       It seems like practically everyone in Kuwait complains of some sort of hair loss (or at the least falling hair to the point that it is annoying) or other hair or scalp problem. I don’t know why that should be so, but I can certainly speculate a variety of possibilities. Some of the possible reasons include the type of water here in Kuwait, the type of pipes in most places here in Kuwait, the weather, the pollution, the food, and the list goes on. Chances are that it is a combination of all of these, with a heavy dose of stress and anxiety added in for good measure. OK, so we’re stuck with the environment, and we’re basically stuck with the water as well, although a good carbon filter will do wonders on that front for a little up front expense. We’re not stuck with the food though, nor are we exactly stuck with the stress and anxiety either, unless we choose to be, but getting rid of stress and anxiety is easier said than done, to be sure.

                      The first thing you need to do if you are suffering from any kind of hair or scalp problem, is to straighten up your diet. Without getting into minute detail, make sure that you are eating a well balanced diet, and having plenty of fresh raw or cooked vegetables and fruit. Included in your well-balanced diet is a necessary dose of protein, as well as healthy carbohydrates, including whole grains, dried beans, and lentils. Try to leave out as much of the junk as you can, even if you don’t completely eradicate it, although, eradication is certainly the ideal. So, do your best to cut out pre-prepared foods with additives and preservatives, things with colorings, flavorings, and other enhancing agents. Remember that you are in need of the foods that have the most vitamins and nutrients.

                       There are several medical reasons that hair might fall out as well, and these reasons must be accounted for in any case. If you are a woman the reason might be your hormones. Get them checked just in case, and even if nothing shows up in the tests, you still might have a mild hormonal problem. If you are a man, you might be facing male pattern baldness, which is hereditary, and basically hormone based as well (it seems that the men with the most testosterone have the most tendency toward this problem). I find that calendula is the best, but if you don’t have it available, then olive oil works fine as well. Add about three drops of the following pure essential oils: rosemary, juniper, cedar, and eucalyptus. There are others as well, but those are the strongest and most effective for this problem. They will work individually as well, but they definitely work the best together. For itchy scalp you can use the same oils as for falling hair, and if that doesn’t help, try lavender or tea tree instead, in case you have an allergy or dermatitis. Also, if you are suffering from drab, lackluster hair, your best bet is to do oil treatments for it. There are several great oils, including coconut oil, jojoba oil, and almond oil. You can add essential oils to the mix, depending on what your problem is. If you hair is too oily, then add lemon oil, too dry, add sandalwood. But, again, eating correctly is one of your main allies.

                       You may also wish to try any of several alternative body therapies as well, in order to remedy any glandular problems that you might have, particularly if you are suffering from hair loss due to a hormonal imbalance. The best choices are reflexology, acupressure, and acupuncture, but, in my experience, reflexology works the best. These treatments work to activate all the glands and the circulatory system in the body, for total health rejuvenation.

So, just because your hair is falling, or in a miserable state, it’s not the end of the world, but it is a sign that you need to take action right away. So, listen to what your body is telling you, and do something about it. Your health is a precious gift that you have to take care of.

The insect season is beginning here, and will continue to get worse as the summer approaches. Here in Kuwait we are bothered by flies, ants, mosquitoes, spiders, cockroaches, and many other bugs too. Mosquitoes, ants and spiders are particularly annoying since they not only bother us, but also bite. Some people have allergic reactions to bug bites, and swell up when bitten, which can be extremely dangerous and, for a few people who have severe reactions, even life threatening. Luckily, here in Kuwait, we don’t have a lot of bees and wasps, but they are still present and we still must be careful. Cockroaches don’t bite, but they are certainly annoying and dirty. No one wants to have cockroaches in their home. Flies also don’t bite, but they bother us with their buzzing and they carry diseases as well. To be sure, the general idea is to keep insects out of our lives, but how can we do this without using dangerous chemical sprays and lotions?

In order to keep bugs off and away from you both at home and out in parks, zoos, at the stables, and in the desert, there are several essential oils that will do the job. All you have to do is make a light blend of one or more of the following pure essential oils in a base oil. Citronella is considered the strongest and most effective of all the essential oils when it comes to mosquitoes and other insects (including fleas), but also good are lavender, peppermint, clove, lemon grass, eucalyptus, tea tree, geranium, and cedar oils (if you don’t have the essential oils, the dry or fresh herbs will work almost as well). Olive oil is a good choice for your base and it is widely available here in Kuwait, and is good for your health (as are all of the above mentioned essential oils too).

Just take a few teaspoons full of the essential oil and add several drops of essential oil (not a lot, less is more when you are dealing with essential oils, so for every 5 ml (one teaspoon) all you need is three drops of oil (total), which isn’t a lot). If you have already been bitten, the best oils to use are lavender and tea tree. You can simply apply either or both of them straight out of the bottle. They are mild and I’ve never seen anyone with an allergic reaction before, but you might want to check by doing a skin test first, just in case. For post bite itch calamine lotion works, but the essential oils are much more effective. The faster you apply them, the more effective they will be. Along those lines, Skin-So-Soft from Avon contains citronella and is great for keeping off the mosquitoes. Some people also swear by vanilla! But they say it must be the pure, real vanilla, not the artificial type that is sold in many places. Popping some natural sage or rosemary onto your barbecue next time you have a cookout should keep away the mosquitoes without any problem at all. For flies, hanging little sachets of the herbs mentioned will generally keep them away.

                               If you are having trouble with bugs in your home, then there are several natural solutions to your problem that might help you get away with not using Fleet, Raid, or any of the other chemical sprays which can all be dangerous. First of all, if you want to keep the ants, cockroaches and other bugs away don’t feed them! While I’m sure you don’t do this intentionally, you are probably still doing it by leaving food around uncovered. Small crumbs are discovered by ants right away, and before you know it there will be an army of them carting off the remnants of your last cookie. If you have children in the house all the more reason to be careful, because not only do children get crumbs all over the place, but they are also very susceptible to bug bites. The bugs will have to go elsewhere if you don’t give them gourmet meals all the time. Then, if you still have problems, there are several natural remedies that you can try. Cedar will help in many cases, particularly with moths, and you can put cedarwood in your closet to ward them away, or you can get a cedar chest and keep your wool items in it for storage. If you are bothered by bugs in your yard, you can plant marigolds. They are easy to grow and keep the bugs away. For ants and cockroaches, spraying them with soapy water helps and even kills cockroaches (much better than those nasty sprays, don’t you agree?), but even better put cucumber peels or mint tea bags around the places where you see them, and the ants and cockroaches too will be far less likely to enter your abode. Some people swear by cayenne pepper, lemon, cinnamon, or coffee grounds as well. They say all you have to do is put a small line of whichever of these you choose (mine would be one that smells nice) and the ants won’t cross. Also, I bet you didn’t know that catnip is a safe cockroach repellent!

For the past few days in Kuwait we have been having some unusual weather. Cloudy, a little humid, dusty, sometimes sunny and warmer, then rainy has been our daily serving of weather and it looks like it’s taking its toll on us, the people who live here. Although this is the time to sit outside at night and chat at a coffee shop, café, or restaurant, while taking advantage of the cool, breezy weather, unfortunately it’s not so good for our sinus health. This is the time of year when lots of people are suffering from sinus complaints, and this includes people who don’t normally have such problems.

If you go to a conventional doctor you will most likely be given the usual antihistamines or steroids to control your allergic reaction or dry up your excess mucous, and if those aren’t what you are complaining of, then you might even get sent away with nothing more than Panadol, and thus, have to live with your drippy sinuses, and perhaps a headache that you don’t normally have. Well, don’t worry, because help is on the way, and it’s only as far as your kitchen!

If you are one of those people suffering from a runny nose at this time of year, welcome to the club, I also found myself suffering from sinus drainage this year. First of all you really need to cut out dairy as much as possible, and also yeast products if those bother you. (Even if they don’t bother you normally, sometimes it helps to stop them for a period of time, until the season passes and then you can go back to them). Then, you can take in plenty of warm fluids, like herbal teas, hot soups (but preferably clear not creamy ones), and other hot or warm foods, and also plenty of fresh vegetables, preferably cooked. And everybody knows what happens when you eat horseradish! Instant sinus drainage! So, if you suffer from sinus blockage or stuffiness, get right out to your local supermarket or Japanese food supplier (or restaurant), and get some nice hot horseradish to eat with your food.

Try to stay away from places that will increase your symptoms. This means, don’t hang around with people who smoke (or sit outside with them), try to keep your home as dust free as possible, stay away from chemicals and pollution as much as possible, and stay away from pets, plants, and other possible allergens (which you will have to determine yourself, through experimentation).

You also need to do steam inhalations as much as possible at this time, in order to keep your sinuses as free as possible. All you have to do to make a wonderful home steam inhalation is to get some nice cooking sage or thyme, and, if you have rosemary that is nice too. Boil some water and get it ready. Prepare a large steady bowl, a spoon, a towel (to cover your head with), and a place where you can sit comfortably with your head over the bowl with the towel over your head. Once everything is prepared, you can take a handful of the sage and/or other herbs, and crush them lightly in your hand. Pour the hot water into the bowl, drop the herbs in, and swish them around lightly with the spoon, then get your towel right away and situate yourself with your face over the bowl, the towel over your head, and the steam going directly into your sinuses with every breath. You should be prepared to stay there for at least several minutes, taking deep breaths and letting the herbal aroma permeate into your sinuses. Once you feel that the steam has dissipated, you can either continue by adding more hot water, or stop if you feel that you have had enough. If you have essential oils, even better, because when you steam with essential oils, their benefits are directly received by our nasal mucosa and enter our bloodstreams immediately which make the action against the sinus inflammation or mucous buildup even stronger. Some good choices in essential oils would be thyme, eucalyptus, and pine. These three oils are some of the strongest and safest in the world, but all you need are a few drops! Remember, even if you don’t have those herbs or oils around the house, and if you can’t find them anywhere (as they are scarce here in Kuwait) then you can always use other herbs that you find around your kitchen, like marjoram, oregano, chamomile, lavender, or even just plain hot water! If you don’t have time to steam, then the next best thing is to inhale the essential oils right out of the bottle. Although this is not as effective as steam inhalations, it is still better than nothing.

Also, don’t forget to wash your nose regularly with water, and try to sniff some up a little as well. For those who find that difficult, you can make a saline solution by taking a little salt (preferably sea salt, of which there is plenty available here in Kuwait), and mixing it with water, which you can put into a dropper and use in your nose from time to time throughout the day. This solution will help you a great deal, and will enable you to breath better if you are suffering from sinus blockage. Now, for those of you who are not faint of heart, you can actually wash out your sinus passages with this saline solution that you have made, and doing so regularly is really a great idea for continued sinus health.

Another helpful thing that you can do is reflexology. If you press on the areas around your finger and toe nails, and on the tops of your fingers and toes, you will be helping to clear out your sinuses. If you can’t do it yourself or don’t want to, then seek the help of a professional reflexologist. Acupuncture is good for sinus problems and acupressure is as well. But, before you go to people for treatment, make sure that the ones doing the treatments are professional, because here in Kuwait there are so many different places offering such treatments, and one wonders how qualified a lot of them are? I don’t think there is a single person on this earth who can say that they have never ever suffered from a headache of any sort. I can happily say that I rarely suffer from them, and when I do have one it is mild, but, indeed, I have experienced it none the less. Some people suffer from headaches all the time, every day, all day, for almost every day of their lives. That is not living to be sure.

Just to give you some statistics about the prevalence of headaches, in the USA it is said that up to 45 million Americans have debilitating headaches that are chronic, that almost 90% of mean and 95% of women have had a headache sometime or another, and that every 10 seconds or so a person enters an emergency room in the USA complaining of a headache. Statistically over 1 billion dollars (US) are spent on over the counter medicines or headaches of different types and that the cost of lost work is 13 billion dollars (US) on a yearly basis! That is just to name a few of the multitude of statistics available out there on headaches.

While it is clear that conventional medical practitioners have a very difficult time curing or relieving headaches, in general, even with strong medications, in my own personal experience with treating various types of headaches (including the most severe migraines), alternative choices are easy to apply and are highly effective.

First of all the cause of the headache must be sought out. Chances are that it is sinus related in my experience. If you suffer from headaches that are mostly in the front of your head, or around the sides (near the front), in and around your eyes, forehead, cheeks, etc, then you can be almost positive that the problem is sinus related. Now this doesn’t necessarily mean that you are suffering from a sinus infection, and it’s likely that if you did an x-ray there would be no cloudiness at all, but none the less you are still having sinus related problems.

So, if this is you, then there are many ways that you can help yourself, including steaming with essential oils and herbs (like sage, thyme, rosemary, lavender, eucalyptus, etc), getting reflexology treatments (or treating yourself by pressing the areas around your nails and at the tops of your fingers), acupressure or other body techniques, drinking herbal teas (also made of sage, thyme, rosemary, and eucalyptus, among other choices), and dietary changes (stay away from dairy, corn, soy, coffee (and other items containing caffeine), MSG, aspartame (diet drinks and foods), yeast, white sugar, white flour, fermented foods, prepared meats (such as cold cuts like smoked turkey, bologna (also known as mortadella here in Kuwait), artificial preservatives, additives and colors, and anything else that you discover causes you problems). Make sure that you are eating plenty of healthy, wholesome foods, like fresh meats, poultry, and seafood, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with whole and healthy grains. If you are a smoker, you must quit!

There are sometimes other causes of headaches, like from tension (when the pain is at the back of your head, starts at your neck and goes up to your skull). In order to get rid of this type of headache, there are several simple things that can be done. First of all, make sure that you do your best to get rid of the cause of all your tension. If you hate your job, change it! Either that or change your attitude about it, and try to find the good things in it. Become an optimist. Then, stretch! The best and easiest way to get rid of tension related headaches is to stretch and thereby loosening those tight muscles preventing future tightness (which is what caused your headache in the first place). Just sit calmly in a chair or on the floor, which your body and head as straight as possible, shoulders down and relaxed, and then slowly let your head drop, with your chin heading toward your chest. Just let the weight of your head bring it down further. Don’t hold your head up, just let it hang, and the muscles will be slowly released. You can do this several times a day, and it can be done anywhere. After only the first day you will feel a great deal of relief, and after several days, you should be totally rid of your tension headache. You can also use essential oils, like ginger, rosemary, lavender, geranium, peppermint, and others directly on the area that you are feeling pain in, by mixing a few drops of each in a base oil (such as olive oil), which will also help to loosen those tight muscles. Don’t forget heat either. Whenever you are suffering from pain or tightness, practically anywhere in your body, heat is your best bet. You can use hot compresses, a hot water bottle, or a heating pad. Tension headaches also respond quite well to reflexology, acupressure, and other forms of bodywork, and with reflexology, you can even help cure yourself! Meditation, yoga, deep relaxation, and more will also be extremely useful in such cases. The idea is not only to deal with your tight muscles, but also to deal with the mental causes that brought on your headaches in the first place.

There are headaches that are caused by other rarer neurological or other organic causes (like tumor, etc), which would show up with medical examinations. For this reason you should always consult a medical practitioner if your headaches last longer than normal, or don’t respond to ordinary treatments, such as those that have been mentioned above.

With all of the different types of headaches, you need to make sure that you are getting enough sleep, enough exercise, enough sun, and enough of anything else you might be lacking. All of these factors play an important part in our every day well being.

So, if you are suffering from headaches of any type (particularly sinus or tension) remember that help is right around the corner. You don’t have to suffer any more. Take action and get rid of your problem with alternative therapy. You can choose the method that you like the most, or that is most suited to your particular complaint, and you’ll be on the road to comfort in no time at all!

After a hard day on your feet at work, play, shopping, waiting in lines or running back and forth doing errands, your feet will surely be aching and possibly swollen. There is a statistic out there that states that 40% of Americans suffer from foot problems. This is particularly true for ladies who wear high heels, or men who wear uncomfortable businesslike shoes. Do you have to suffer? Absolutely not!  Help is on the way.

            The first piece of advice is to wear shoes that are comfortable and fit well. That way you can, perhaps, avoid the problem of stiff, swollen, achy feet in the first place. But, if you still come home with throbbing, swollen feet, the first thing that you should do is get into comfortable clothing, and find a comfortable place to sit, so you can have your feet in the hot water for as long as possible. Get some reading material like a magazine or a good book, so that you won’t be totally bored. Or just set up your gear in front of the television, so that you can watch your favorite program while you relax. Draw some hot water into the bathtub or into a large basin. Make the water as hot as you can possibly stand it, but not to the point of burning (be careful here, because you may not even realize how hot the water is before you have already burned yourself). Once you have set everything up, add some sea salt, lavender essential oil, mustard powder, peppermint essential oil, vinegar, fresh ginger pulp, sage leaves, or any other soothing herb or essential oil that you may have around the house. Then, sit down and carefully put your feet into the hot water, taking great care that you do not burn yourself. Keep a thermos of hot water sitting next to you in case your footbath water cools down a bit. Whenever you notice that the water is getting cool, just add hot water, until it’s nice again.  Then, sit and relax!

If you are lucky enough to have someone around to massage your feet for you (whether it be a professional foot therapy like reflexology, or a friend or family member) then do take advantage of the opportunity. You can easily make your own fantastic massage oil by blending together olive oil and a few drops of almost any essential oil that you may have on hand, particularly lavender, peppermint, marjoram, tea tree, eucalyptus, sandalwood, rosemary (which is great for the swelling too), or any other nice smelling essential oil, cream or lotion. This is partly because of the climate here being dry and dusty, partly because there is a lot of pollution here, and partly because the diet is often not the best. Oils including eucalyptus, rosemary, thyme, sage, tea tree, and lavender, are great for a start.
